OLD WORLD WINES
France
“A relatively strong effort for this vintage, but hardly one of the profound examples of Petrus, this wine exhibits a dark plum color and a somewhat monolithic, foursquare personality with notes of plums, black cherries, licorice, and some herbs and damp earth. Medium-bodied, muscular, and tannic, but lacking some charm and sweetness, it should age nicely for 12-15 more years and possibly be even better than my score. Readers who buy it should not even attempt opening a bottle for at least 4-5 years.” – Rated 90, Robert Parker
“Gorgeous subtle aromas of crushed raspberries and light vanilla, with hints of spices. Medium- to full-bodied, with wonderfully seductive, silky tannins. Beautiful slinky finish. Pétrus is very fine indeed in this vintage. Not overdone, all in the right place. Best after 2009. 1,665 cases made. –JS” – Rated 93, Wine Spectator

Drink now through 2020.”

MERRYVALE PROFILE 2002 RED BLEND
90 Points, Wine Spectator
“This wine combines firm, ripe, complex fruit with excellent structure. The core flavors are centered around a mix of currant, black cherry and plum and the acidity and tannins are in the right proportion, giving it a resemblance to a fine Bordeaux. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2012. 3,050 cases made.” ~J.L.

Deep ruby-red. Aromas of cassis, blueberry, licorice, lead pencil and Cuban tobacco. Dense and powerful but rather elegant; the petit verdot contributes to the wine tactile impression. Still rather austere; this will need considerable bottle aging. Note of dark chocolate. Finishes very long and firmly tannic.

SULLIVAN VINEYARDS MERLOT 2000, 2001
From Winemaker’s website: “This Merlot is both bright and expressive; it explodes on the palate with flavors of cherry, cranberry, and caramel. In making this wine, we maximized extraction levels from the grape skins by employing the technique of dry farming. This allowed us to create an intense and concentrated wine. After fermentation and extended maceration, the wine was barrel-aged for a total of 14 months, using a combination of American and French Oak.”
2000 Vintage Tasting Notes: “Fuller, soft, round mouth feel with ripe black plum and rhubarb. Finish is well balanced dusty finish with hazelnut, cinnamon, nutmeg, rhubarb and pomegranate.”
Blend: 86% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Sauvignon
2001 Vintage Tasting Notes: “ Bright and expressive with pronounced flavors of cherry, caramel, and pomegranate; this wine has a clean, crisp, and focused entry. On the mid-palate it is round, elegant, refined and seamless. It finishes long and structured, leaving you with intense fruit-flavors and complexities.”
Blend: 100% Merlot

DUCK POND CABERNET FRANC, COLUMBIA VALLEY WASHINGTON, 1997
90 Points, Wine Enthusiast

Duck Pond Cab Franc exhibits “wonderful perfume aromas, long on fruit, including strawberries, chewy and big, bits of chocolate, lengthy finish.” Complements big, robust, and spicy foods.

SPAIN
92 Points, Robert Parker
“The 1968 Vina Valoria is a more substantial wine than the 1973. Brickish ruby-colored, it yields a lovely perfume of cedar, tobacco, spice box, and cherry fruit. Its personality is all about elegance with nicely concentrated, ripe fruit enmeshed in a velvety-textured, medium-bodied wine. Considerably more structured than the 1973, it should continue to drink well for another 4-6 years.”
